The Rome Mill is seeking a Safety Engineer to support our linerboard mill. We are looking for a committed individual that has an interest and background in Safety Services and Administration in a manufacturing environment.
This position reports to the Safety Manager and is has supervisory responsibility for supporting, developing and administering the facility safety leadership, safety, health services, security, emergency response, fire inspections, and safety training programs, policies and procedures to ensure the mill complies with all applicable health and safety corporate initiatives, laws and regulations to achieve an accident free workplace.

years heavy industrial or chemical safety capital project exposure, revamp policies for first responder rescue exp, confined space rescue , LOTO, fall protection, risk analysis for pedestrian segregation capital project pending. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Integrating continuous improvements in safety systems by driving employee engagement to achieve desired results.
Promoting and participating in the planning and implementation of communication strategies which deliver accurate, consistent and timely information on business safety issues and employee concerns.
Investigating incidents, injuries, or occupational illnesses to determine root causes and preventive measures.
Ensuring incidents are investigated thoroughly with documented reports. Ensure corrective actions due to the incident(s); conduct facilities inspections, and environmental testing.
Planning and implementing safety policies and procedures in compliance with International Paper policies, local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
Inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
Conducting or coordinating worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment; including hands-on proficiency evaluations.
Reviewing employee safety programs to determine their adequacy. Write and revise company safety manual regulations and codes.
Overseeing and coordinating ergonomics program and efforts to reduce all forms of muscular-skeletal illnesses.
Interviewing employees to obtain information about work environments, incidents, and feedback for workplace improvements.
Reviewing plans and specifications for installation of new machinery or equipment to determine whether all safety requirements have been met.
Recommending process and product safety features that will reduce employees exposure to chemical and physical work hazards.
Planning and coordinating industrial hygiene program elements with contract IH services including directing testing of air quality, noise, or temperature levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations.
Conducting frequent Safety Inspections and lead the annual KES Audits to ensure continuous improvement of safety practices and much follow up to see if corrective action taken.
Supporting the management of Medical Services and contracted Mill Nurse to ensure all policy requirements are met including, but not limited to Hearing Conservation, OSHA 300 documenting requirements, BBP, inoculations, first aid, patient care, emergency response medical surveillance, absentee documentation, DOT medical waste proper disposal, and other requirements.
Coordinating the administration of workers' compensation return to work program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time.
Coordinating post incident or reasonable suspicious drug testing.
Supporting the Management of Contract Security Department. Coordinating security systems and procedures to enhance overall employee safety and security, including access control, CCTV, emergency procedures, etc.
Coordinating MSDS recordkeeping and Global Harmonized System.
Directing and maintaining the Emergency Response Team including Fire Marshall and EMTs.
Coordinating Mill Emergency Response up to the level of Incident Commander. Ensure training is maintained.
Responsible for all fire system inspections.
Support all Capital Job Coordination, KES Capital Jobs, and Assistance with LIFE Capital Projects.
Technical Expert for Fire System and Emergency Response. Interfaces with FM Global, Corporate Risk Management.
Representing the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Safety or Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related engineering discipline. 5-10 years SAFETY experience at a paper mill and/or related business experience, 10
years preferred.
Strong Technical understanding of Federal and State Safety and Health regulations.
Experience working with regulatory agencies and with the Corporate EHS&S group is a must.
